Little Jackson celebrates is 3 day birthday today! He's been doing pretty good. He's receiving oxygen via a cpap and taking food by IV. His nurses have been slowly reducing his supplemental oxygen level as his lungs improve. He's at 40% this morning. We also got a report that his breathing patterns have started to stabilize a little bit. Born 7 weeks early he's been having a real difficult time moving those lungs. Our pediatrician came by yesterday and explained that it usually takes around 3 days before a baby will start showing much improvement. Jackson's been fairly stable and has been slowly improving, but we're hoping to see some quicker progress today or tomorrow.
Apparently little Jack has a bit of an attitude. The cpap is a device that's inserted down his nose and is taped securely to his cheeks. The very first night he figured out how to yank it out (see loose tape in above photo).
The next time we visited he had a new cpap and his arms were restrained by a tightly wrapped belt made with a folded blanket around his chest. The next morning after the nurse shift change I noticed the blanket had been removed. The new nurse was apparently unaware of Jackson's distaste for the cpap. Sure enough at our next visit the blanket restraint had returned. Later that evening little Jack, still restrained, grabbed one of his visitor's fingers with his left hand and then as we were oohing and aahing over his cuteness he released his grip and deftly snuck his whole arm up under the blanket restraint and started tugging away on the cpap again. Back to the drawing board... The nurse calls him a little Houdini.
At his 4 o'clock diaper change yesterday the nurse was quite excited to discover that he seems to enjoy being tightly wrapped up in a full body blanket and placed on his tummy. It looks more like a straight jacket than an arm restraint. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he figures his way out of that one...
