As I approached his station, I could tell Jackson was squirming around and he was also bathed in blue light. The night before they mentioned he might need some bilirubin treatment so I knew this is what the blue light was for. It was a pretty nice setup though because instead of an overhead lamp, he was wrapped in a fiber optic blanket. Knowing Jack prefers to be wrapped up, the nurse made an effort to find the blanket version and apparently had succeeded.
More significantly, I then noticed that his cpap had again been pulled out. A quick check of his oxygen saturation revealed he was actually getting enough oxygen from the room air! I also noticed his cpap was set for 21%, which is room air concentration. So, overnight he must have improved to the point that he no longer needed any supplemental oxygen. Looking back at Jackson I noticed the cpap lying on his bed had simply been freed of the tape still attached to his face. So, even though it had been double taped our little Houdini had again figured out how to circumvent the plans of trained professionals and defeat the latest in neonatal technology.
An hour or so later when Laura and I were able to come together, the tape had been removed and he was still breathing room air. His nurse told us he probably would not need the cpap again. How fitting that little Jack would be the person to remove it for good.
